Do I Have Washer & Dryer Hookups? A Renter's Guide
Understanding Washer & Dryer Hookups
Before renting a washer and dryer, you'll need to know if your apartment or rental home has the proper hookups. Don't worry—it's easier to check than you might think!
What Are Hookups?
Hookups are the utility connections needed to operate a washer and dryer:
Washer hookups include:
- Hot and cold water supply valves
- A drain pipe or standpipe
- An electrical outlet (standard 120V)
Dryer hookups include:
- A dryer vent leading outside
- A power outlet (240V for electric, or gas line for gas dryers)
How to Check Your Apartment
- Look in the laundry area - Check closets, utility rooms, or the garage
- Find the water connections - Two valve handles (red for hot, blue for cold)
- Locate the drain - A pipe 1.5-2 inches in diameter, usually 30-42 inches off the floor
- Check the electrical outlets - Dryers need a large 240V outlet (4 prongs)
- Find the vent - A 4-inch diameter duct going through the wall
What If I Don't Have Hookups?
If your apartment doesn't have traditional hookups, you might still have options:
- Ventless dryers - Don't require an external vent
- Compact units - Can connect to sink faucets
- Community laundry - Some apartments offer shared facilities
